Type Type L Coming from Saudi Arabia: Needs a shape adapter (from Saudi type G to Type L) Italy runs on 230V — most modern chargers (phone/laptop) automatically support 220-240V; check the label on the back of the charger before use.
Type Type F Coming from Saudi Arabia: Needs a shape adapter (from Saudi type G to Type F) Same note as Type C — check that the charger supports 220-240V before use.

Airports & getting there

Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) – Leonardo da Vinci

Rome's main and largest airport, about 30-35km southwest of the city, handling most long-haul international flights.

The Leonardo Express direct train straight to Termini Station, about 32 minutes
The cheaper FL1 regional train to several central stations, slightly longer with intermediate stops
An official fixed-fare taxi to inside Rome's historic walls (roughly €48-55 as of the last official update — check before travel, this can change)
A pre-booked private transfer from the hotel, convenient for night arrivals or heavy luggage
Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA)

A smaller airport about 15km southeast of the city, mostly used by low-cost carriers and short European routes.

A private shuttle bus to Termini Station, about 40 minutes
An official fixed-fare taxi to inside Rome's historic walls (somewhat cheaper than from Fiumicino given the shorter distance)
No direct train line from Ciampino itself; the bus or taxi are the two main options

Transit & the transit card

Rome Metro (Lines A, B, B1, and the partial Line C)A notably limited metro network for a capital city this size, largely because construction repeatedly hits archaeological finds during excavation that halt or slow tunneling for years; Line C still doesn't fully reach the historic center.
Trams and buses (ATAC)Cover areas the metro doesn't reach, like Trastevere, Testaccio, and part of the historic center; traffic can slow buses during peak hours.
WalkingThe historic center is fairly compact and its major landmarks (Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain) can be linked on foot; the Colosseum and the Vatican need the metro or a bus from most accommodation areas.
Unified transit ticket (BIT / Roma Pass transit)A single ticket works across metro, bus, and tram for a set window (100 minutes for the standard ticket), with better-value daily and weekly passes for longer stays.
Getting between the main areasCentro Storico to the Vatican: metro or a long walk, about 30-40 minutes. To Trastevere: a walk or a short tram ride, about 15-20 minutes. To the Colosseum: Metro Line B or a walk, about 20-25 minutes. To Termini Station: the city's main transit hub, reaching almost everywhere within 15-30 minutes.

Connectivity & eSIM

⚠ Important notice

Italy is an EU and Schengen member and follows EU "Roam Like At Home" rules for EU-line holders; there are no VoIP restrictions or international eSIM provider blocks here like some non-EU destinations on this platform — no access-related eSIM warnings are needed for Italy.

Airalo
Plan example: Italy or Europe package — 1GB/7 days Price: $4.5 Data before throttling: Not officially detailed on Airalo's page for this specific plan Speed after throttling: Not officially stated on the official page for this plan Fair use policy: A fixed data plan, not labeled Unlimited Hotspot: Not officially stated Phone number: Data-only, no phone number (officially stated) Activation: Recommended before travel Prices and features can change; check the official page at purchase time
Saily
Plan example: Italy 1GB/7 days Price: $4.29 Data before throttling: Not officially stated for this specific plan Speed after throttling: Not applicable to this fixed plan Fair use policy: Other plans from the same provider are labeled Unlimited without clear numeric fair-use details Hotspot: Not explicitly stated for this plan Phone number: Data-only in most plans, needs confirmation at purchase Activation: Recommended before travel Prices and features can change; check the official page at purchase time
Local SIM (TIM / Vodafone Italia / WindTre / Iliad)
Plan example: A visitor package or a regular monthly plan bought at a branch inside Rome or the airport Price: $12 Data before throttling: Varies by the plan chosen at purchase Speed after throttling: Not officially detailed per plan Fair use policy: Not officially stated in detail Hotspot: Usually available, needs confirmation at purchase Phone number: A real local Italian number, unlike the two international eSIM options above Activation: Requires passport registration at an official outlet (Iliad sometimes allows online purchase/activation in advance) Prices can change; check at an official outlet or the official website at purchase time
Practical recommendation
Cheapest for a short tripSaily or Airalo — small 1GB plans for a short, budget trip
Best for heavy dataA larger eSIM plan or a regular local Italian SIM for a longer trip or heavy data use
Best for a family (hotspot)Not officially confirmed for any provider — check directly before travel if this matters for your plan
Activate before travelEither international eSIM provider — no special access warnings needed inside Italy as an EU/Schengen country
Recommendation by trip length
3-5 daysA small fixed eSIM plan (1-3GB) from Saily or Airalo
7 daysA medium plan (5-10GB) depending on usage, or a weekly visitor package from a local carrier
10-14 daysA larger plan (15GB+) or a regular local Italian SIM if the trip covers other Italian cities too
More than two weeksA regular local Italian SIM instead of a short visitor package, especially if a real Italian number is needed
A traditional local SIM

Local carrier branches (TIM/Vodafone/WindTre/Iliad) are common around downtown Rome, Termini Station, and both airports; Iliad is known for competitive prices for longer-staying visitors.

Rome weather month by month, and the best time to travel

The figures above are historical climate averages, not a live forecast. Rome has a Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa) with a hot dry summer and a mild rainy winter — genuinely different from Trabzon's humid subtropical Black Sea climate and from Istanbul's comparatively cooler-in-winter near-Mediterranean pattern. Rain concentrates in autumn and winter (October-January) and is almost absent in July and August. Check an updated weather app before any long summer walking day given the intense heat.

Approximate daily budget

BudgetAbout €55-95/day per person — hostel or budget hotel, public transit and daily transit passes, pizza by the slice or a tramezzino, free sights like walking Centro Storico and Villa Borghese gardens
Mid-rangeAbout €120-205/day per person — 3-4 star hotel, mid-range trattoria meals, pre-booked tickets for the Colosseum or Vatican to skip the worst lines
LuxuryStarting around €250+/day per person — luxury hotel near Centro Storico or Piazza di Spagna, upscale dining, private guided tours with priority entry
Estimated figures per person per day including a rough accommodation estimate, excluding flights; they vary a lot by season (July-August is the most expensive and crowded) and travel style. An internal editorial estimate, not a live exchange-rate conversion.
