Airports & getting there
Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) – Leonardo da Vinci
Rome's main and largest airport, about 30-35km southwest of the city, handling most long-haul international flights.
The Leonardo Express direct train straight to Termini Station, about 32 minutes
The cheaper FL1 regional train to several central stations, slightly longer with intermediate stops
An official fixed-fare taxi to inside Rome's historic walls (roughly €48-55 as of the last official update — check before travel, this can change)
A pre-booked private transfer from the hotel, convenient for night arrivals or heavy luggage
Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA)
A smaller airport about 15km southeast of the city, mostly used by low-cost carriers and short European routes.
A private shuttle bus to Termini Station, about 40 minutes
An official fixed-fare taxi to inside Rome's historic walls (somewhat cheaper than from Fiumicino given the shorter distance)
No direct train line from Ciampino itself; the bus or taxi are the two main options
Transit & the transit card
Rome Metro (Lines A, B, B1, and the partial Line C)A notably limited metro network for a capital city this size, largely because construction repeatedly hits archaeological finds during excavation that halt or slow tunneling for years; Line C still doesn't fully reach the historic center.
Trams and buses (ATAC)Cover areas the metro doesn't reach, like Trastevere, Testaccio, and part of the historic center; traffic can slow buses during peak hours.
WalkingThe historic center is fairly compact and its major landmarks (Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain) can be linked on foot; the Colosseum and the Vatican need the metro or a bus from most accommodation areas.
Unified transit ticket (BIT / Roma Pass transit)A single ticket works across metro, bus, and tram for a set window (100 minutes for the standard ticket), with better-value daily and weekly passes for longer stays.
Getting between the main areasCentro Storico to the Vatican: metro or a long walk, about 30-40 minutes. To Trastevere: a walk or a short tram ride, about 15-20 minutes. To the Colosseum: Metro Line B or a walk, about 20-25 minutes. To Termini Station: the city's main transit hub, reaching almost everywhere within 15-30 minutes.
