The planning order we recommend

Start with the season rather than the destination: the month you can actually travel decides which city will be comfortable in the first place. Then choose the neighborhood you will sleep in, because that is the decision that touches every single day of the trip, and only then pick the hotel inside it. Do not build the daily schedule before the accommodation is fixed, or you will find half of each day going into transport. Finally, lock in whatever needs advance booking, and leave some unscheduled room each day — what usually breaks a trip is the absence of slack, not a shortage of information.
