Airports & getting there
Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ)
Sarajevo's only main airport, about 10km southwest of the city center near the Butmir area where the Tunnel of Hope Museum is also located; a far smaller flight volume than Vienna or Rome's airports.
Public bus route 32 from the airport to the city center, a budget option with limited schedule
A taxi directly from the airport, the most common way to arrive quickly, especially at night
A pre-booked private transfer through the hotel or local ride-hailing apps
Transit & the transit card
The tramSarajevo's tram network is one of the oldest continuously operating tram systems in Europe (running since the late 19th century) — a genuinely distinctive real fact worth stating explicitly; the main line runs the length of the valley from Ilidža to Baščaršija.
TrolleybusesAn electric trolleybus network complements the tram on additional routes across the city.
BusesCover areas further from the tram and trolleybus lines, including reaching the airport and the Tunnel of Hope area.
WalkingBaščaršija and Centar are fairly compact and can be linked on foot; Trebević and the Tunnel of Hope need the cable car or dedicated transit.
Getting between the main areasBaščaršija to Centar: a walk or tram, about 10-15 minutes. To the Trebević cable car station: a walk or a short taxi ride from Baščaršija. To the Tunnel of Hope Museum: a taxi or bus, about 30-40 minutes (well outside walking range). To Novo Sarajevo: tram, about 15-20 minutes.
Connectivity & eSIM
⚠ Important notice
Bosnia and Herzegovina is not an EU member, so EU "Roam Like At Home" free-roaming rules do not apply; EU-line visitors should expect normal international roaming charges unless a local data plan or a dedicated international eSIM is activated before arrival.
Airalo
Saily
Local SIM (BH Telecom / m:tel / HT Eronet)
Practical recommendation
Cheapest for a short tripSaily or Airalo — small 1GB plans for a short, budget trip
Best for heavy dataA larger eSIM plan or a local SIM (BH Telecom generally has the widest coverage) for a longer trip or heavy data use
Best for a family (hotspot)Not officially confirmed for any provider — check directly before travel if this matters for your plan
Activate before travelEither international eSIM provider — Bosnia and Herzegovina is outside the EU, so expect normal international roaming charges without a dedicated plan
Recommendation by trip length
3-5 daysA small fixed eSIM plan (1-3GB) from Saily or Airalo
7 daysA medium plan (5-10GB) depending on usage, or a weekly visitor package from a local carrier
10-14 daysA larger plan (15GB+) or a local SIM if the trip covers other Bosnian cities too
More than two weeksA regular local SIM (BH Telecom or another) instead of a short visitor package, especially if a real local number is needed
A traditional local SIM
BH Telecom (the larger state-linked provider) branches are common around downtown Sarajevo and the airport; m:tel and HT Eronet are also available but historically stronger in coverage outside Sarajevo itself.
