Airports & getting there

Tbilisi International Airport (TBS)

The only airport serving Tbilisi, about 17-22km southeast of downtown (20-30 minutes by car outside rush hour, up to 45-60 minutes during it). A single passenger terminal serves both international and domestic flights.

Bus 337 (formerly signed as 37) — the cheapest option, runs to Freedom Square via Isani and Avlabari metro stations and Rustaveli Avenue; about 1 GEL with a Metromoney card or contactless bank card (no cash on board), 45-60 minutes, runs roughly 7:00 AM-11:00 PM only
Official taxi from the airport rank — typically 35-50 GEL to downtown (about $13-19), around 20-30 minutes
Bolt app (the most widely used; Uber does not operate in Georgia) — usually cheaper than a traditional taxi with an upfront fare, roughly 15-25 GEL to downtown
A limited train to the central station — only two departures per day each way at a token fare of about 0.5 GEL, impractical for most arrivals given the limited schedule
Pre-booked private transfer — a convenient option for late-night arrivals or heavy luggage, at a fixed pre-agreed price

Transit & the transit card

Tbilisi Metro (2 lines, 23 stations)The red line (Akhmeteli-Varketili) runs through downtown and the Old Town, and the green line (Saburtalo) serves the western residential areas; they cross at Station Square. Operates roughly 6:00 AM to midnight.
Metromoney / Travel CardThe unified transit card for the metro, buses, and the Rike-Narikala and Vake-Turtle Lake cable cars; the card itself costs about 2 GEL, and a ride is 1 GEL with a free transfer within 90 minutes to any other public transit mode (metro, bus, or minibus). A contactless bank card also works directly, at a slightly higher fare (about 1.5 GEL).
Public buses (Tbilisi City Transport)An extensive network covering nearly every neighborhood, complementing the metro; same 1 GEL fare with the same Metromoney card, running roughly 7:00 AM-11:00 PM.
Marshrutka (minibus)Small minibuses on fixed routes that stop on demand, useful for destinations the metro doesn't reach directly; usually accept Metromoney and sometimes cash (0.8-1 GEL).
Ride-hailing apps (Bolt and Yandex)The easiest option for visitors to avoid needing a local transit card; Bolt is the most widespread (Uber is not available in Georgia). Most rides within downtown run 3-6 GEL.

Connectivity & eSIM

⚠ Important notice

No known documented restrictions on video/voice calls through apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime in Georgia (unlike some neighboring Gulf countries); this is general information from multiple travel sources, not a direct official confirmation from Georgia's telecom regulator.

Magti (Magticom)
Plan example: Tourist SIM: 5GB data + free calls within Georgia for 15 days Price: $5.5 Data before throttling: 5GB Speed after throttling: Not officially stated Fair use policy: Not officially stated Hotspot: Generally supported per multiple sources Phone number: A local Georgian number Activation: Passport registration at airport or city outlets; an eSIM also requires a branch visit to activate Prices and plans may change; check with Magti at purchase time
Silknet (Geocell)
Plan example: Tourist Pack: 4GB data + 30 local minutes + unlimited SMS for 15 days; or an unlimited eSIM plan for 30 GEL/15 days Price: $5.5 Data before throttling: 4GB (or unlimited on the higher-priced eSIM plan) Speed after throttling: Not officially stated Fair use policy: Not officially stated Hotspot: Generally supported per multiple sources Phone number: A local Georgian number Activation: The eSIM can be purchased and activated online before travel, the easiest of the three local providers for this Prices and plans may change; check with Silknet at purchase time
Cellfie (formerly Beeline)
Plan example: 30GB data + unlimited calls and SMS for 30 days Price: $9 Data before throttling: 30GB Speed after throttling: Not officially stated Fair use policy: Not officially stated Hotspot: Not explicitly stated in our sources Phone number: A local Georgian number Activation: The cheapest data option, but coverage outside Tbilisi and Batumi is weaker than competitors Prices and plans may change; check with Cellfie at purchase time
Practical recommendation

Best for a family (hotspot)Not officially stated for any provider — confirm directly before travel if this feature is essential
Activate before travelA Silknet eSIM can be bought and activated online before arrival, the easiest of the local options; or an international eSIM (Airalo/Holafly) as an alternative
Recommendation by trip length
3-5 daysA Magti or Silknet Tourist Pack (4-5GB/15 days) is comfortably enough
7 daysThe same plan above, or a short-term international eSIM as an alternative
10-14 daysSilknet's unlimited eSIM plan (30 GEL/15 days) or a Cellfie monthly plan
More than two weeksA Cellfie monthly plan (30GB/30 days) or renewing a local plan as needed
