Airports & getting there
Trabzon Airport (TZX)
Trabzon's main airport, on the coast only about 6-7km west of the city center — one of the closest airports to a city center in Turkey; serves domestic flights from Istanbul, Ankara, and other Turkish cities, plus some seasonal/direct international routes.
Taxi directly from the airport rank — about 10-15 minutes given the airport's unusual proximity to downtown
Public bus or minibus (dolmuş) from outside the terminal to downtown Trabzon — cheaper but needs knowing the stop and schedule
Pre-booked private transfer from the hotel — convenient especially for night arrivals or heavy luggage
Renting a car at the terminal — practical for travelers planning day trips to Uzungöl or Sumela Monastery later in the stay
Transit & the transit card
Public buses and minibuses (dolmuş) within the cityThe main way to get around Trabzon itself, between downtown, the seafront, and Boztepe; cheap but schedules and stops usually need a local check or a maps app.
Taxis and local ride appsEasily available within the city; practical for reaching Boztepe or hotels off the main bus routes.
Organized day tours or a rented car for Sumela and UzungölTrabzon has no train or metro; reaching Sumela Monastery (about 46km) and Uzungöl Lake (about 100km) needs a private car, a full-day taxi arrangement, or an organized tour — there is no regular, reliable public transit to either.
Walking within the old city centerThe castle, old bazaar, and Hagia Sophia area are close enough to cover on foot, unlike Boztepe, Sumela, and Uzungöl which all need a vehicle.
Getting between the main areasCity center to the seafront: a walk or a short minibus ride, about 10-15 minutes. To Boztepe: taxi, about 10-15 minutes uphill. To Akçaabat: minibus or taxi, about 20-30 minutes. To Sumela Monastery: car or tour, about an hour to 90 minutes. To Uzungöl Lake: car or tour, about two hours.
